On Friday, August 8th, 2008, a team from Michigan Brewing Company (MBC) rolled out to the Great Taste of the Midwest Beer Festival in Madison, WI. Their vehicle: The "Green Machine" - a 1-ton Ford F-350 powered by 1:1 regular diesel, and biodiesel produced onsite at MBC. The truck made the over 380 mile trip to the festival grounds where they were met by brewers and industry peers with open arms, and a lot of questions. "We had an overwhelming response to our (MBC) operations, how the biodiesel was manufactured, and its application in modern times," said Tim O'Callaghan, MBC Home Brewing Consultant and "Green Machine" driver.
Partnering with Michigan State University in 2007, the MSU Bio-Refinery Training Facility was implemented on site at MBC, where MSU provides training on the production of various \"bio\" products including ethanol and bio-diesel. As part of the Bio-Refinery Training Facility, MSU provides recycled vegetable oil from the kitchens on the University campus. The oil is collected, filtered and then shipped to the Michigan Brewing Company. Through experimental processes, the oil is converted into bio-diesel fuel which then powers the steam generator used to brew the beer and various diesel vehicles used for brewery operations. \"From here on out,\" said Bobby Mason, MBC President, \"we will continue educating the public and growing the refinery, bringing us closer to our goal of being one of the greenest breweries in the country.\"
The benefits of producing and using biodiesel are many. This clean-burning fuel produces less air pollution (creating almost zero carbon emissions), comes from renewable sources (such as soybean or canola oils, waste cooking oils or animal fats such as waste fish oil), is safer for the environment and is biodegradable. Mechanically, a traditional petroleum diesel vehicle needs no retrofitting and can burn biodiesel with no modifications to the combustion engine. Not only does the production of biodiesel benefit the environment, it will also stimulate a sagging economy by creating local revitalization through jobs and partnerships in agriculture and manufacturing.
